The Preparing Experience

Microwave popcorn is a product that was designed and marketed for convenience.  Instant coffee and Lunchables are also convenient.  Can you guess where I am going with this?

Quinn popcorn is going to require a little more from the user than pressing start.  Here is what the sequence looks like right now:

1 – Place bag in microwave.  Set on high for three minutes and press Start.

2 – Stop and remove once time between pops is roughly 3 seconds

3 – Pour contents of oil pouch onto popcorn and shake vigorously.

4 – Pour contents of flavor pouch onto popcorn and shake it again!

Yup, that’s right.  The user will add the oil and flavorings.  In all honestly this is a necessity because our ingredients won’t make it through the microwave without burning – and ten other reasons.  I think (hope) that this will be a value add, that this will add to the enjoyment of Quinn popcorn, but who knows.

This is one of the things that keeps me up at night.  I could, and without a doubt eventually will, pontificate on why a deeper engagement makes food taste better – why we like to craft what we put in our body.  In the end, however, I just don’t know how this will all translate for our popcorn.  This is one of the things that could sink us.
